Racism
I remember being deeply shocked when asking a class about where they would like to go on vacation. America was a popular choice as was Canada and the UK. My suggestions of India or Africa were met by fits of laughter as the kids made openly racist remarks. I looked over to the Korean teaching assistant expecting her reaction to be quite harsh but she was laughing too.
I left the room. From then on I made a point of taking photos into the class of all my friends, especially those with ethnic minority backgrounds. While it may be tempting to yell at the students and lecture them on racism it is important to remember that this is a cultural problem. By showing students that you are not impressed with such behaviour and by introducing them to the concept of racism you will be surprised at how quickly their attitudes change. Using pictures of famous icons like pop stars or their favourite sports stars and explaining their backgrounds is a useful tool.
