Do I Have To Have a Degree to Teach in South Korea?
Yes. To obtain an E2 Teaching Visa you are required to send either your original degree or a notarised copy to your employer. You are also required to send copies of your transcripts. A three year degree in any discipline is the minimum accademic qualification necessary.
Do I Have To Be a National of Either the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africs or the US?
Yes. Korean law requires teachers to be nationals of one of these English speaking countries. You must hold a valid passport from one of the countries mentioned above.
Do I Have to Have a TEFL Qualification?
Legally, teachers do not have to have a TEFL qualification to teach English in South Korea. The general level of English ability among hagwon students is quite low and many TEFL courses are designed for the more advanced learner. TEFL course which include some practical elements of teaching and/or courses aimed at young learners are most suitable for teaching in South Korea. Please bear in mind that other countries outside South Korea may require you to have an accredited TEFL qualification.
