Education

Highest Qualification: BA
Degree Subject: History with Journalism and Creative Writing
University / Institution: The TEFL.Org
Grade: A
Do you have a TEFL certificate: Yes
Details of TEFL certificate:

I undertook a 188-hour virtual Level 5 TEFL course including a 20-hour weekend TEFL course. The course also specifically covered: 19-hour Principles of Teaching English as a Foreign Language Course; 30-hour Online Grammar Course; 79- hour TEFL Methodology Course; 20-Hour Online Video Course; 10-hour Telephone Teaching Course; 10-Hour Teaching Large Classes Course.
During the 20-hour weekend course we had practice teaching both a PPP and a skills lesson to the rest of the class and completely took on the role of the teacher. We were marked by an instructor for these lessons and in these lessons I ‘demonstrated enthusiasm and first-rate application to the tasks’ by the course director. My feedback also stated me as having’ first-rate’ lesson planning and an ‘excellent’ understanding of the issues in TEFL.
Personally the course revised my knowledge of grammar skills, prepared me to organise lesson plans and taught me the fundamental principles of teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Were you educated in your native country?: Yes
Education comments:

I obtained a first-class degree in History with Journalism and Creative Writing with foreign exchange at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. During my academic studies I developed many skills that are critical to teaching English as a foreign language. During my pursuit in learning French, my understanding of the complexities of language have grown and thus I understand the potential difficulties in learning a new language. In my final year of university I was captain of two sports teams that required a significant amount of my personal time and attention. I also had a part-time job in a restaurant and volunteered as a childminding assistant. Despite this, I managed to gain a first-class degree in History and Journalism with Creative Writing due to my excellent time management skills, determination and drive. I am extremely capable of dealing with different stressful obligations without losing focus, maintaining punctuality and, as demonstrated, with good results.

Date of employment: May 2016- Jan 2021
Summary of role:

I have previous experience of working with young children as I volunteered at a local childminding business, Ladybird Childminding. Job title: Sports coach
Employer: Volunteer position
Date of employment: May 2019- May 2020
Summary of role:

I have taken the opportunity to coach and mentor adults in my role as women’s captain in both my University badminton and shinty team. As captain, I was responsible for coaching two teams of 20 adults weekly and organising teams for weekly competitions across Scotland. This massively increased my confidence in addressing and teaching groups of adults as well as developing an appropriate approach to teach adults compared to children.

Supporting Information:

Why do you want to teach overseas?:

I want to make a positive impact on the future of children and hopefully develop them into confident English speakers. It gives me joy to teach others and learn from other too and to do this as a job would make me feel extremely privileged.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

As you can see in my resume I have the right qualifications for this role but I also think that I possess all the right attributes and skills that make a good teacher. I’ve got strong organizational and time management skills which I think I have proved by gaining a first-class degree in my final year of University while being the captain of two sports teams and having a part time job. I managed these time consuming activities by planning my days, organizing ahead of time and not to collapse under pressure. I’m also responsible, calm and genuinely passionate about teaching. I’m not applying to this position for the money or just to have a job but because teaching English as a foreign language is what I’ve wanted to do since I went to University. I want to make a positive impact on the lives of your students and help guide them to be competent English speaking people. Finally, I love travel and have experience of living abroad. This is important as you don’t want to hire someone who’s going to be homesick and leave in a few months. I understand what it’s like to move abroad and live in a different culture, with a different language and learn to adapt to this new environment.

Additional information:

Thank you for taking the time to review my application. I would greatly appreciate a chance to schedule an interview so that we can further discuss how I can move to the next steps in my journey to teach English as a foreign language.
