Why do you want to teach overseas?:

Recently, I had the chance to travel to Kenya, Africa on a volunteer trip where I was working with children in the local schools. During my two week stay in Africa, I travelled to many different towns and met students from 3 different schools. These children were strikingly smart and impressively passionate about their education. Education, in any manner, is a privilege in a country such as this. Having the opportunity to witness this made me aware of how fortunate I am to live in Canada, where a standard education is an expectation. As I have come to this understanding I want to continue interacting with children on an international scale. Everyone should have the opportunity to learn, and I would love nothing more than to take my educational background in communications and law and utilize it for a greater purpose.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

My family has prioritized travel on an international level for as long as I can remember. Out of this has originated my passion for immersing myself within new cultures and growing from these opportunities. From my past lived travel experiences I have learned the difficulties of travelling overseas – the language barriers, the cultural differences (including an introduction to new food), and the importance of proper vaccinations are all concepts I am aware of. On top of my past travel experience, I have moved cities and established a life by myself when starting university. This experience gives me hope and awareness of what it takes to successfully start a new life. Meeting a new group of friends, living with complete strangers, and developing knowledge of a new location are commitments I am ready to take on!

Additional information:

I have also been involved in the Carleton Communication Undergraduate University Student Society for the past four years of my education. I started off as a mentee -reaching out to my mentor and learning what to expect from my courses and professors in the first two years. After successfully completing the menteeship I have now been acting as a mentor for new students. The role reversal has taught me what it takes to be an effective mentor – I noted areas I would have liked my mentor improved and made it a mission to ensure I helped my mentee the best way I knew how.
