Work Experience

Position

Job title: Summer Club Teacher
Employer: Inglaterra en Casa
Date of employment: July – August 2017/July – August 2018
Summary of role:

I had the opportunity to gain experience creating and delivering class content for a group of Spanish teens for 4 hours a day, every day, for a month. I had to follow a set syllabus but the teaching method and delivery were down to personal choice. The classes needed to be fun and cooperative but also educational and engaging, covering a range of subjects from science to drama to cooking.

Position

Job title: Teacher
Employer: Inglaterra en Casa
Date of employment: January – July 2018
Summary of role:

I took the place of a teacher that had to leave the academy – joining half way through the academic year proved to be tricky at the start, often covering material that had already been covered, however, from previous experience in the summer club, I was quickly able to recover and begin to create exciting yet educational content for both my adult (A2 & B1) and child classes. Covering everything with regards to grammar principles and vocabulary included in the curriculum and preparing them for informal examination. I formed great connections with both the children and the adults and believe that this plays a huge part in successful teaching.

Position

Job title: Private Tutor
Employer: Languages and Sun
Date of employment: March – December 2017
Summary of role:

I frequently went to the homes of numerous families both during term time and during the summer holidays to teach English to children and help with their English homework, mostly 1-1 classes but often joint classes with siblings. I had to create curriculum and class content based on each individual child’s needs and the wants of their parents, some families wanted a more fun and playful environment for their child to learn English, others required a more structured and academic environment.

Supporting Information:

Why do you want to teach overseas?:

By teaching overseas, I can combine the two things that I love the most – teaching and travelling. I love to teach as I believe there is no better feeling than that of seeing the reactions of students when they grasp a concept or learn a new word and use it in the correct context, the satisfaction and pride that I feel makes all the time and effort planning classes extremely worth it. My love for travel began when I was very young, travelling often with my parents for far away, exotic places. I continued that trend independently as soon as I was old enough to work and pay for the trips alone. Discovering new cultures, languages, traditions, food, people and lifestyles is a real hobby of mine and I would thrive at the opportunity to combine that with teaching.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

Aside from my previous experience teaching abroad, I believe I have great cultural awareness and respect for others, I understand the difficulty for others to learn languages as I myself have had to. I have the patience and ability to understand people who may even not have conversational level English and am always willing to spend time trying to encourage them, and to improve their confidence. I have found this out more recently as most of my friends now are foreign and have come to me to help them with their English or just to have a conversation and practice.
