Why do you want to teach overseas?:

I am very passionate about working with children. I am particularly keen to teach English as a foreign language as, through teaching abroad, and also from hearing about my Mum’s job as an ESOL teacher, I know how important it is to learn English for so many people to improve their career opportunities.
I love travelling, as I have demonstrated from my overseas volunteering and various holidays abroad. Teaching English overseas would be a great way to learn about a new culture and help others to learn an important new skill. I have been to India, and Eastern Asia is somewhere I would like to explore more as I have friends who recommend it.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

I have a varied set of skills which I have developed through my university degree, my volunteering roles in the UK and abroad, through working and through music. I consider myself adventurous, passionate about children and education and I love meeting new people.

I am a recent graduate of Psychology in which I received First Class Honours from the University of Glasgow. Throughout my education I found that I have a keen interest in child development, having studied Human Development and Atypical Development, and having written my dissertation on the relationship between parents and children and how this is effected by sleep. Through volunteering I have found that I enjoy working with children and young people of a range of ages. It is now my ambition to pursue a career supporting children and young people and their families.
I have a variety of experiences working with vulnerable adults and children in different countries and settings, from a range of ages. Last summer I taught English in India, supervised homework and volunteered as a classroom assistant in a residential school for children aged between 3-18 years old. Many of these children are from slums, prostitute or leprosy colonies. The school aims to improve their quality of life through providing clothing, 3 meals a day, a bed to sleep in and arranging for clothing donations whilst also ensuring the children who did have families remained in contact with them. Over the past 4 years my family has contributed a lot to this school such as money, teaching and classroom equipment. In addition, I worked closely with a young girl, aged 15, who had severe depression since being separated from her family 6 years ago. I was put in charge of mentoring her and taking her to the doctor to discuss antidepressant medications. From this experience I gained an understanding of the value of providing children from a disadvantaged background with a safe and educational environment, and with items which are often taken for granted.
During summer 2017 I volunteered in Sri Lanka in a Psychiatric ward. I learnt a lot about the cultural differences in attitude towards mental wellbeing. During my time in Sri Lanka I also taught English and helped children with special needs. Through this I demonstrated my ability to be sensitive to different children’s needs and my ability to encourage learning through a range of creative techniques such as arts and crafts and educational games. Every lesson was very well planned and knowledge and help was provided by more experienced volunteers. Following every lesson the volunteers engaged in reflective practice and in a group decided what worked well, or did not work well and how we could improve our techniques for the following session.
Similarly, when I volunteered in Romania in 2015 with the charity LifeFoundation, we were trained to engage in reflective practice and update a journal for all the volunteers to detail what worked well or did not work well with certain. The children had experienced severe neglect in institutions or orphanages. I learnt a lot about the impact of neglect on development. For example many adults and young people had not learnt to talk and showed signs of institutionalised autism. Reflective practice helped me to prepare and deal more effectively with difficult children in very adverse situations. From this experience I have a practical understanding of how much our environment shapes how we develop and I was able to utilise the environment in creative ways to stimulate development. For example a simple ball can be used to throw and catch to improve motor skills but can also be used to teach children about colour and shape, or can be rolled across the arm to encourage sensory stimulation. I learnt to use a range of techniques to communicate as well as teach children from a range of ages and abilities. Therefore, I consider myself sensitive, adaptable and flexible to children’s needs and to different teaching approaches. I believe I am now able to effectively recognise and respond to the effects of deprivation, trauma and the environment on individual’s functioning.
This past November I spent 5 weeks volunteering in a children’s hospital in Brasov, Romania. I met some parents of the children, mostly Roma, who struggle with money and resources to look after their children while they are in the hospital. Our work predominately involved simply spending time with the babies and children to reduce the effects of neglect. I have since had a tour of the Glasgow Children’s Hospital, where I have just been accepted to start volunteering. I found that the biggest difference was the support given to the families. For example, there is an area dedicated to providing advice for families, such as on benefits for when a caregiver misses work due to taking their child to the hospital. I was very impressed to find that the design of the hospital surrounds mental well-being for the children and the parents/caregivers. I believe that supporting the family is just as important as supporting the children.
With the charities Citywise and Over the Wall I mentored children to increase their confidence and build character. These charities attain this by being positive to encourage the children to grow as well-rounded individuals, especially for children who may not have certain academic and physical abilities. I learnt the value of helping children explore their range of abilities and attributes, rather than focusing on activities they struggle with. We did this using the GIRFEC approach. I found this work incredibly rewarding as I was part of helping children with physical disabilities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds to grow in confidence and happiness. With both charities we met the caregivers of the children and found what a positive impact our work had on the families lives. From working with these charities I also found how poor physical health, peers, teachers, parents and personal backgrounds often impact children’s mental health. This made me appreciate the variety of factors which can contribute towards children’s development.
These volunteering experiences allowed me to gain experience of working in a team to share and learn skills. Through this I became better at communication and being able to ask for help when I need it. This gave me the confidence to develop my ability to work on my own and I have demonstrated that I can show initiative when leading group activities, such as teaching English in Sri Lanka and India, and working with children 1:1 during my volunteering with CityWise.
My degree taught me to be organised, work towards deadlines and work under pressure. I also developed my verbal skills through giving presentations, my ability to communicate with others such as during group work and when working with my dissertation supervisor. I developed my written skills on Microsoft Word through writing essays, lab reports, literature reviews and research proposals. I was also able to manage my time and work flexibly around other commitments such as orchestra rehearsals. In addition I have in-depth knowledge about mental health, mental wellbeing and child development, including GIRFEC and it’s principles.
Through my volunteering and my degree I have demonstrated that my core values include empathy, positive attitude, patience, creativity, achievement, commitment and ambition.
Being empathic has driven me towards working with children, especially with those from a disadvantaged or traumatic background. I have demonstrated this through my volunteering endeavours such as working in Romania, Sri Lanka and India, and with the charities CityWise and Over the Wall. By being empathic I was able to communicate with and listen to the children I was working with which helped me support their needs.
Maintaining a positive attitude helped me through some very challenging situations with children with problematic behaviours, and some upsetting scenes in Romania. For example we were faced with over 40 degree heat, working outdoors with children and adults with very problematic behaviour. Being able to laugh and have a sense of humour is so important to release tensions and make challenging work more enjoyable for everyone. In addition, when faced with challenging situations, patience is key. I have often been faced with language barriers and being patient has served me well in being able to communicate more effectively. For example, some children in India were determined not to go to class and it was very frustrating chasing a child to class only for them to appear a few minutes later distracting another classroom. However, with patience and creative techniques I was able to get children to go back to their own classroom.
Creativity is one of my core values. I have a great interest in art and music and it is something I enjoy encouraging children to participate in. I have worked with children and adults who speak a different language to myself or who are unable to talk at all. Arts and crafts is a universally great and fun way to allow children and adults to express themselves across any language barriers. I love finding creative ways to use whatever is available in the environment for educational and fun games. For example, when I volunteered with a research team with children aged 8-12 years old I enjoyed creating games, such as getting the children to find certain animals in a museum and encouraging the other children to help them with the “hotter” or “colder” game, then bring me a fun fact about the animal.
I have always set high standards for myself and have a need for achievement. Doing well is rewarding, and I enjoy reflective practice to evaluate what I did well, or what I can improve on to increase my sense of achievement. I utilised my need for achievement to get my First Class Honours degree, which I did so by being organised, determined and committed. I consider myself very committed. For example, through commitment to music via private practice and being part of many different orchestras, I was able to attain Grade 8 distinction on cello and grade 7 on double bass. It was also my commitment to studying that enabled me to achieve my First Class Honours in Psychology. In addition, after my ambition to work with children was sparked years ago, my volunteering and my choices of subject within my degree demonstrate that I am very committed to working with children. I consider myself incredibly ambitious. It is my ambition to help improve children’s development to pave the way for a healthier future generation of adults. I will achieve this by developing my knowledge and skills of working with children and their families.
