Supporting Information:

Why do you want to teach overseas?:

Travelling has always been a big part of my life. After finishing University I spent 6 years working on super yachts travelling around the world. Together with my extended travels – through Africa, Australia, Mauritius and my recent 8 month trip through East Asia (India, Cambodia, Sri Lanka) – I have learnt to realise the value and impact that verbal and non-verbal communication has on cross cultural communication with individuals from all walks of life. In addition to my travel and work experiences helping and working with children/people and animals has always been a passion of mine, this includes being able to pass on my experience and skills onto others whilst learning about a culture and the people who live there. Having the opportunity to teach English in overseas represents the perfect opportunity and provides me with a platform to travel the world whilst helping others in turn.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

Working in Europe for 5-6 years after completing my degree, together with my extended travels – through Africa, Australia, Mauritius and my recent 8 month trip through East Asia (India, Cambodia, Sri Lanka) – I have learnt to realise the value and impact that verbal and non-verbal communication has on cross cultural communication with individuals from all walks of life. My work and travel experiences have also highlighted the importance of implementing the correct communication techniques across cultural boundaries in order to successfully convey and understand one’s message correctly. In addition to this, my experiences have allowed me to understand the significance of being culturally aware/respectful and tolerant of other cultures in addition to being sensitive to your own actions and how they may be interpreted in various situations.

Having also worked as a tutor/examiner for one of the country’s top Universities – being responsible for 11 tutorial classes consisting of 169 students in total. I am aware of the fundamental pressures and demands of managing and coordinating multiple classes simultaneously, from preparation of lessons to marking and assessing students’ progress within set deadlines, all whilst communicating and coordinating with the heads of each relative department and the objectives set by them respectively. I am also particularly aware of the importance that effective and relevant verbal and non-verbal communication and the materials/tools used to convey this message has on teaching students as well as the significance of being aware of your students’ individual needs and the impacts it has on a student’s ability to understand and learn in class.

Furthermore having acquired a degree at a research-based university in addition to working in a fast paced evolving and dynamic environment (Super Yachting) I have developed a strong orientation towards continuous learning and development—which has conditioned me to embrace new challenges and opportunities for future growth and have allowed me to adapt and mould to new environments relatively easily.
