What is TEFL?

TEFL stands for ‘Teaching English as a Foreign Language’ i.e. teaching English to people who are not native English speakers.

You may also come across the following acronyms; ESL (English as a Second Language), TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language, ELT (English Language Teaching), TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).  All of these terms mean similar things and the terms can be used interchangeably – making the subject quite confusing!

Q.  Do I need to have a TEFL certificate to be able to teach English overseas or Online?

A.  Generally, no but sometimes, yes!

Requirements differ from country to country and often from school to school.  Here is an outline of the positions Flying Cows offers and how having a TEFL qualification can affect your application, and chances of success.

Korea – a TEFL qualification is not essential for teaching in Korea but having one (of any length) shows potential employers that you have a real interest in teaching and can help you attract job offers.  The job market in Korea is flooded right now so having a TEFL qualification can help you stand out from the competition.  It will not however mean that you will be paid more than a candidate who does not have a TEFL qualification.  Having a degree (in any discipline) is essential but having teaching experience is not.

China – a TEFL qualification is not essential for teaching in China but again, it can show potential employers that you are genuinely interested in teaching.  Unlike Korea, in China you are likely to be paid more if you have a TEFL qualification of over 100 hours in length.  A degree (in any discipline) is essential but having teaching experience is not.

Thailand – a TEFL qualification is not essential for teaching in Thailand.  You are likely to receive a higher number of job offers though if you have one and it can have a positive effect on your salary.    A degree is essential, experience is not.

Teaching English Online – Candidates must have one of the following; a degree, a TEFL certificate (any length) or experience.  Having two of the three is good, three out of three is great.   Having a TEFL qualification is likely to positively affect your chances of being offered a position as well as your salary.  You will be asked to do a demo class before you are offered a position and TEFL courses can prepare you for this.

Types of Qualifications

There is a huge variety of TEFL qualifications available from short online courses to month long classroom courses.  Some courses are accredited and others are not.

120 hr TEFL Course & Guaranteed Paid Teaching Placements in Thailand.

The TAP program is an innovative new approach to TEFL training and recruitment, designed specifically for those entering the TEFL world for the first time. Who needs the hassle of figuring out a strange new country, overcoming language barriers, and wasting time hunting for the right job? We’ve packaged it all up for you. What’s more, we’ve persuaded the recruiter to foot the bill for your TEFL training, saving you $600.

Once you’ve decided to teach English in Thailand we take care of everything, hiring you in advance for an ideal first job, meeting you upon arrival, accommodating you for the 4-week course and arranging for you to transfer to your school.

The TAP is similar to an internship, except you are paid a full salary, and the employer subsidises your TEFL training to help you get started without much investment in your certification. Once accepted on the program you can relax, with the peace-of-mind that your arrival in an exotic new country will be stress free, without any uncertainty or job hunting hassle.

Currently offered only twice a year, in April and October, the program enrols dozens of new teachers who congregate in Chiang Mai for a month of intensive training on the internationally accredited TEFL International course – a certificate that will serve you well around the TEFL world.

The one month training in Chiang Mai is a great bonding experience. You’ll be joining two dozen other new teachers as we train and mould you into effective teachers. A bit demanding and intensive at times, the course is nonetheless a great confidence builder full of fun activities, with six visits to local schools for teaching experience. There’s no need to be nervous; mingling with these exuberant kids is an energising experience.

Where will I live during my training?

The centre and apartments are located in the heart of the university district and not far from the foot of the national park mountains. You will have access to the atmosphere of the student bars and coffee shops, while being within walking distance of waterfalls and hiking trails. Each trainee gets their own room in a comfy serviced apartment with pool. The city itself is a hub of tourist activity for soft-adventure, and soaked in cultural heritage.

The program initially covers two terms with a minimum one-term (4 month) commitment, after which you are free to move on or sign up for a new contract with a 15 percent pay rise. During this time you are assigned an experienced teacher mentor and given support as you settle into teaching.

What kind of teaching jobs are offered in Thailand?

Our jobs are in good provincial schools, where you will likely have several other foreigners nearby for company and be provided with convenient and comfortable accommodation. For many, it’s a charming and authentic first experience of Thailand in the lovely countryside, free of big city intensity or overpriced services.

Unlike other internship programs there is no significant cost to join the program and your salary package amounts to $1,000 per month which is competitive with entry-level jobs in Bangkok. Most teachers are able to save considerably outside of the big city, and even earn extra by teaching privately after hours. The school year in Thailand comprises of a two month summer holiday and six week autumn break allowing you to travel.
