Why do you want to teach overseas?:

My motive to apply to work in South Korea mainly concerns experience, adventure, and knowledge. As a recently graduated student (although delayed, due to COVID-19), I, like many other students in my position, am seeking employment after University. I had already secured a summer job to teach Italian adolescents English as an activities leader in London during the summer of 2020, but this was also unfortunately cancelled due to COVID-19. This would have been a great experience for me, since I am planning on starting a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in September 2021. Therefore, this opportunity in South Korea would be a fantastic way for me to gain experience that I feel is necessary for me to prepare me for my PGCE and a future career in teaching. South Korea attracts me because it would make me more independent, take me far away from everyday life, and would be something outside the norm. Furthermore, as a Human Geographer who takes interest in different people and the world, this opportunity therefore also appeals to me due to the cultural aspect attached to it, giving me a chance to taste new cuisines, meet new people and learn more about an already advanced and established society in South Korea. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, this experience would provide me with a different outlook on how teaching works in South Korea. I particularly focused on teaching styles in the classroom during my volunteering at Firth Park Academy and feel that there is potentially a different style of teaching in a South Korean classroom, compared to a UK classroom. By allowing me to compare different styles and approaches to teaching, this would make me more knowledgeable in teaching styles and would give me more ideas as to how to teach effectively and enjoyably at the same time, whilst also creating a good atmosphere and impression in the classroom. The opportunity would also enable me to learn more about lesson planning and how to create a fun and educational environment, therefore giving me more ideas in whatever future lessons I may teach.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

For over a year now, I have been interested in teaching as a career path. I firstly became intrigued in teaching at University since I applied for a short-term internship to teach in the summer of 2019. Teaching has attracted me for a multitude of reasons. Through growing up in a low socio-economic estate and attending state school my whole life, I have grown up with and appreciated diversity since my childhood. In addition, I have also grown up and been friends with people with troubled lifestyles. With these reasons in mind, teaching appeals to me because every child, no matter what their background is, has a right to good education and teaching is also a powerful tool in helping children, teenagers and young adults towards a good future and to show them the correct path, no matter how troubled or challenging their lives may be. Also, my mother has inspired me to delve into the world of teaching, since she has recently qualified as a primary school teacher in 2019. Talking to my mother about her new experiences and stories from the classroom has further excited me and solidified my decision in pursuing a career in teaching. Overall, I am hoping to become a teacher soon and will likely take the PGCE pathway in the UK. Although I am not ready yet to start my PGCE, I am relishing a challenge and something entirely outside my comfort zone for the sake of experience and preparedness for the future. What this opportunity will give me is not only skills, knowledge and ideas for my future career, but will also give me a sense of adventure, freedom and excitement as a young adult who is venturing for such things listed. Therefore, I am excited and willing to take this opportunity, granted that my application is successful, and look forward to seeking various and valuable ways of gaining experience towards my teaching career.
