Job title: Assistant Language Teacher

Date of employment: July 2015 – July 2018

Summary of role:

Responsible for watching over groups of children anywhere between the ages of six weeks to twelve years old at YMCA facilities, after school sites, and summer camps. Supporting Information:

Why do you want to teach overseas?:

I have a passion for education and discovering new cultures. To me there are fewer things more enjoyable in life than coming to understand someone from a radically different walk of life and helping them achieve their goals–especially the attainment of a means of communicating with potentially anyone, anywhere. More broadly, teaching overseas, particularly a lingua franca like English, is a primary means by which individual countries and the international community as a whole can grow closer together, fostering peace and prosperity for all. This is a cause I deeply believe in, and it provides me with that much more meaning and motivation as a teacher.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

As someone who has lived for an extended period of time overseas, I believe I have the knowledge, experience, and expertise to once again teach abroad. I am even more confident in this due to the fact that my three years of teaching in Japan were spent in a rural environment. The relative isolation (not to mention the frigid winters) proved at times to be quite a challenge, but through it all I emerged as both a better, more empathetic educator and human being.

Additionally, i-to-i’s TEFL course has opened my eyes to so much in terms of English education. Even more than before I feel capable of delivering engaging and practical lessons to students of all ages through tried and true teaching methodology and resources, as well as providing English learners under my tutelage with the encouragement and incentives they both need and deserve.
