Work Experience

Position

Job title: Assistant teacher / sports coach / Gap Student
Employer: The Pilgrim’s School, Winchester
Date of employment: January 2016 – December 2016
Summary of role:

I had the privilege of working in the U.K. as a boarder-master, sports coach and assistant teacher at the Pilgrim School in Winchester. The school is an all male primary school and I have found the experience I gained from my time there to be invaluable. I assisted Drama and English lessons and took on the responsibility of assisting in the school play. I headed up a waterpolo team that previously did not exist and coached rugby, football and cricket as well. Most nights I assumed pastoral duties as a boarder master in the boarding house and one weekend a month I was in charge of an excursion. Other duties included evening prep duties, physical education lessons and after schools extra-murals such as drama club.

Why do you want to teach overseas?:

Dear Future Employers.

My names is James Redman and I am 23 years old. I have spent most of my life living in South Africa, however, thanks to my dual citizenship I have been privileged enough to travel the world and experience different cultures and climates. This enabled me to spend a year working in Winchester after school as an assistant teacher, sports coach and boarder master. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Cape Town where my core focusses were English literature and film production. I am currently completing my honours degree online through the same university, specialising in film theory and practice.

Why Teach Overseas?

After my year at the Pilgrim’s School in Winchester it became apparent to me that working in education was not only a passion of mine, but also an environment in which I could thrive. It was through this experience that my desires to travel and experience the world were ignited. Furthermore, with my honours degree nearing its completion in February of this year, I  have been ruminating on possible career paths moving forward. Since I am passionate about literature and Filmmaking, it is no surprise that I intend to be a screenwriter. I want to write movies, great ones too! However, It would be a futile endeavour to enter into the screenwriting world as a young and unaccomplished writer with only a handful of life experiences. Therefore, teaching overseas presents me with the opportunity to support myself financially and experience the world through doing something that I love, while simultaneously allowing me to mature and learn as a writer and person.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

I am a suitable candidate because I promise to work diligently and professionally. I already have some teaching experience and my filmmaking knowledge and skills will allow me to bring exciting and interactive activities into the classroom in a modernised, effective and authentic manner, while my study of literature provides further avenues of exploration for more advanced students. I am a hardworking and driven individual who thrives of the empowerment of others.
