Why do you want to teach overseas?:

I want to teach overseas, as my experience in China substantiated my wish to teach English as a foreign language. I enjoyed and relished teaching, especially finding creative ways to introduce new materials and vocabulary to suit different classes and age groups. Whilst teaching in China, I would aim to make my classes different to maintain my students’ engagement and motivation. I also adapted my approach depending on the class’s needs or that of an individual. This allowed them to progress and fully reach their potential in their pursuit for language attainment.

Studying my masters in TESOL has given me further insight into the theories surrounding EFL, which has enhanced my skills learnt from teaching in China. Both experiences have developed my outlook on teaching English, as it is more than just vocabulary, punctuation and grammar. Although these aspects are paramount to learning any language, the context is of equal importance. I often found creative ways to ensure I delivered an ‘authentic’ context for the use of English in the classroom. From my masters, I now know that the use of authentic materials would also be an effective way for students to practise English, as it reflects the use of English in the real world. Teaching in China allowed me to discover my love for teaching and my masters in TESOL has further developed my understanding of teaching EFL, therefore I wish to put this knowledge into fruition.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

I am a suitable candidate, as I find creative and innovative ways to teach English, which is based on the classes needs as well as the individual. This philosophy stems from my experience teaching in China and my knowledge learnt from my masters. I believe that teaching English should have multiple approaches and methods that reflect students’ needs. As different approaches are needed for different ages and their outlook on learning. Younger learners benefit from creative and visual materials that are easy and quick to understand. This will keep young learners motivated and engaged in language learning. Therefore, I would create an activity lasting 10-15 minutes which would allow enough time for them to all participate and practise in the activity without becoming distracted and bored.

My experience in China and my master degree has given me useful insight into how to teach the English language. Such as, the personalities of students was something I would address in my lessons. For example, when I had many introverted students, my classes would aim to build their confidence one-to-one before asking them to answer in front of the whole class. I would create games where students had to compete together either in teams or individually, this allowed for a relaxed environment which benefited both extroverted and introverted students. Through my experience in China I recognised the importance of conversation skills and also the extensive amount of practise, which is needed to teach and learn English. Furthermore, my master degree has developed my understanding of theory and methods of teaching English as a foreign language. This knowledge learnt from my master will help me improve my teaching style and benefit my students in the future. I plan to further develop my teaching skills by experiencing a different educational curriculum and furthering my knowledge learnt from my masters. This opportunity will provide me with a different teaching environment which will develop my teaching style and skills.
