Why do you want to teach overseas?:

I enjoy teaching because I look forward to seeing learners grasp an understanding of their learning goals. I haven’t had much experience teaching in a traditional classroom setting, however, I have trained new employees in the work setting. While it’s different in a lot of ways, there is still that aspect of practicing until the task becomes second nature. I believe that learning English is very similar. Once they put it into practice and use it in context enough times, learners will establish muscle memory. I don’t believe it is helpful for learners to learn one concept and then simply go on to the next, leaving behind the lesson they just learned. It is important to incorporate past lessons into new lessons so that students can continually practice these English skills in context.

I want to teach overseas because I don’t want to simply teach my students without understanding their culture and language. I believe that being immersed in their culture and language will help me understand my students better and therefore be the best teacher possible to them.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

I believe I am a suitable candidate to teach overseas because I truly enjoy learning from cultures different from my own. While living in Buffalo, I developed relationships with clients from Afghanistan to the Republic of Congo, sharing their culture and life with me over meals prepared from their home country. This experience has given me the empathy and open-mindedness that is vital for living and teaching abroad. While I may bring skills and knowledge with me, I am still a guest wherever I am placed and I must be willing to learn from my host country. They have as much to teach me, if not more, as I have to teach my students.
