Supporting Information:

Why do you want to teach overseas?:

I have always been employed in part-time work alongside my studies, in the sector of catering and hospitality, however I deeply value the idea of building a career for myself in the educational sector. I have participated in a volunteer scheme in summer 2018 in Beqaa Valley, Lebanon whereby I planned and engaged in sports, games and outdoor activities for children residing in the nearby refugee camps. Here I learnt relevant skills specific to classroom management, cultural sensitivity and leadership as well as teaching children from different cultural backgrounds. I also received training on how to manage difficult classroom situations and potential cross-cultural conflicts that may arise, in addition to supporting children during trauma.

Also I believe my prior experience matches the qualities required to teach overseas. In my time as an intern at an international school in Shanghai, I helped to provide pastoral care and emotional support to students during exam seasons and conducted individual tutorial sessions to observe their progress and wellbeing. This has provided me with an insight into the self-care techniques and effective ways of emotional expression for individuals in high stress environments.

Not only do I want to build a career for myself in education, but I also love to travel and have the adaptability skills to adjust different cultures.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

Throughout 2018 I was employed as an intern at an international school in Shanghai. For one year I helped to maintain an enjoyable and comfortable boarding house environment for children living in the boarding facilities. Also, I assisted teachers in their English, EAL, maths classes as well as running my own co-curricular activity in debating for children aged between 7-10. During the final six months of the internship I became a teacher’s assistant for a year 4 class. Out of school hours, I participated on the Academy Programme, whereby I assisted session leaders instructing children in extra-curricular activities such as football, swimming and rounders. I also tutored children in English, maths and EAL.

Due to my experiences amongst different cultures and settings I have assisted a wide variety of students and so I am adaptable to each learner’s requirements. I have a good educational background in English and Psychology as well as comprehensive experience with Key Stage 2 group children. I have experience planning for individual lessons and the organisational skills to track the progress and development of abilities, in addition to excellent communication skills. I am able to provide clear, concise written feedback on assignments and assessments, enabling students to enhance their work further.

I have prior knowledge of working within NGOs and small organisations operating in the relief work of refugees and other vulnerable populations. This experience has lead me to adopt a caring and understanding approach to teaching and education in general, and I believe my experiences align well with what it takes to be a suitable candidate to teach overseas.
