Just over a year ago I applied to do my School Direct ITT based in Woolacombe (North Devon) and was accepted to start at the school studying through Plymouth University. In that time I passed all my Professional Skills tests (Maths & English), DBS check and had experience working with children from Reception – Year 2. In addition to this, I worked at a local Nursery throughout the summer holidays as voluntary work. Unfortunately due to unforeseen personal circumstances I had to withdraw my application. This in mind, nearly 2 years later, I am back in London, working a sales job that doesn’t light me up. I am still wanting to teach and feel that combining my burning desire to travel with the opportunity to teach abroad will meet my current goals and aspirations.

Supporting Information:

Why do you want to teach overseas?:

The way we humans interact, learn, thrive, and feel emotion is through the connections we build and learn from others. For me this not only demonstrates why teaching is such a rewarding career, but it highlights a very close belief of mine; We will never know it all, we can only learn and encourage one another to better ourselves and develop into the person we’ve always dreamed of becoming. The UK has supported and guided me into who I am and what I know today, but to grow and learn, my belief is that we must experience outside of our comfort zones and experience different cultures to truly understand different ways of life and its meaning. This is what I intend to do, and is also a reason why I would like to teach overseas. Having worked in a number of roles that have involved Sales, Event management, Project management and Client management, UK based, which all heavily focus on the numbers and the quality of relationships you have as an end result, I’ve realized that I truly want to pursue a path where I’m not just thinking about the pay packet at the end of the month. I need something more fulfilling and allows me to give back. To make a difference and truly help others. With all the experience and life lessons I have learnt through school, college, university and full time employment I have reached a stage that could only offer satisfaction within a profession that is giving back but also allowing me to learn and experience different cultures. It is this realization that has me knocking on the door to education overseas, as I know it to be a door I will fit, perfectly, passionately and proudly through.

Why are you a suitable candidate for teaching overseas?:

Having grown up with a dyslexic brother with no confidence; I’m not oblivious to the fact that teaching isn’t all stars and rainbows. There are a number of challenges that teachers face; balancing the needs of others, preventing and managing conflict, ensuring each child is learning and progressing, children that come from difficult backgrounds and so much more. The reason I mention my brother is that by seeing, and helping him on his journey, it has opened up my eyes and allowed me to grow as a person. I’ve learnt how to empathize, listen and understand others in a number of different ways. Life isn’t a one way street. I’ve learnt to be patient and that encouragement, can drastically affect the way people feel, think and ultimately the decisions they make in later life. When I was managing my Travel team at a National paper I had colleagues of all levels and it was my job to ensure they were successful in their targets, yet also progressed up the career path they desired. This role was fulfilling because I didn’t feel like it was just a target to hit every month, I had responsibility and I was looked to as a guiding hand towards said progress and goals. Every cloud has a silver lining. Reward is only presented upon the successful overcoming of challenges. Seeing children grow intellectually, socially and to be an influence on their personalities is such an exciting notion! Whether it’s been my Netball coaching, Event, Project, Team or Client management; I have always been involved in seeing a project or person develop into something or someone inspiring and great! Which is why I feel having all this in mind, I’d be a suitable candidate for teaching overseas.

Additional information:

So who is Laura Barnfield and what will she bring to schools overseas? I am an overly enthusiastic individual that will always bring passion, creativity and a positive output to those around me, which I feel are three components that will benefit students in a practical, theoretical and social way. Everyone consumes information in different ways. Take myself for example. I am very hands-on. I need lots of colour and a way in which I can draw to connect all the dots! By bringing all three of the above to a classroom, whether you’re a Visual, Verbal, Aural, Logical or a Physical learner, each type of learning can relate to one of these three. Three key, strong skills of mine have always been communication, organization and teamwork. Having worked in a number of client facing roles, managed and trained an entire Netball club and juggling a number of hobbies, such as: Netball, Gym, Yoga, Silk painting, baking; I’ve learnt how to be effective with my time and how to get the best from people in a timely manner. I’m never too scared of a challenge, a number of people would note this down as crazy but I’ve moved house, jobs and location all in one go! I just truly believe that there is no limit and have always been educated in such a way to believe that you really can achieve anything when you set your mind to it.

With this in mind, I will endeavor to make sure every pupil embraces the beauty of knowledge, creativity, and to live at their highest level where they love, learn and experience. I want to be that influence from the beginning, as it is them that have such an exciting journey ahead with endless possibilities given the proper guidance whilst overseas.
